Our ceremonies are thoughtfully crafted by Shae Burnette, who brings years of experience creating meaningful rituals. Skipper Moe Gevirtz and his crew set sail on Yakamoz nearly every week to bid farewell to our furry, feathery, and even scaly companions at or near San Francisco's Golden Gate.

The Yakamoz Story
Sailing Vessel Yakamoz
is a 36-foot 1978 'Columbia 10.7' --a sailboat that moves by wind power, rarely burning fuel.
She was purchased in sorry shape in 2018 and painstakingly rebuilt by Moe Gevirtz and a community of dedicated sailors.
Now, she is used to teach sailing for BackyardWilderness.org
This is Diana, one of the regular crew who helps take your friend's ashes to their final resting place.
What does Yakamoz Mean?
Yakamoz means "Sea Shine" In Turkish. Sea-shine is caused by bioluminescent creatures that glow when the waves crash. Turkish people will also tell you that yakamoz means one of two things: the shine of the moon off the water, or bioluminescence -- small animals that glow when a ship or whale swims by them.

Fair Winds Maritime Memorial allows us to provide a meaningful service but also helps sustain our non-profit (in process) backyardwilderness.org.
It is our deepest wish to help people connect with the natural world. We share this world and this life with non-human companions - some live with us. , we call them pets, others are wilder. When we work to understand those most different from ourselves, we wind up learning who we are.
